Intel showed off an early prototype of the next generation Thunderbolt™ that conforms to the USB4 v2 specification released today by the USB-IF Organization. The next generation Thunderbolt will deliver 80Gbps two-way bandwidth, up to 120Gbps for video or data transmission, resulting in a superior display experience, three times the 40 GBPS speed of Thunderbolt 4, and will meet the growing demands of content creators and gamers alike. Compatible with previous versions of Thunderbolt and USB interface standards.

This prototype demonstration of Thunderbolt technology is another important milestone in Thunderbolt industry innovation. Content creators and gamers are increasingly demanding not only high-resolution displays and visual effects with lower latency, but also higher bandwidth for backing up or transferring large video and data files. The new generation of Thunderbolt will deliver up to three times the 40 GBPS transmission capacity of Thunderbolt™ 4, creating a more efficient and immersive experience for creation and gaming. In addition to supporting the latest versions of the USB4, the next generation Thunderbolt will include improvements in a number of areas, including: Thunderbolt 4 doubles its 40Gbps bandwidth to 80Gbps, and can triple its bandwidth to 120Gbps for video-intensive applications. Support for the newly released DisplayPort 2.1, bringing better display experience to users. Double PCI Express data throughput for faster storage speed and higher external graphics card performance. New signal technology supports up to 1 meter of existing passive cables. Compatible with previous versions of Thunderbolt, USB, and DisplayPort. Enjoy Intel support and certification programs.

In an effort to make Thunderbolt an advanced connectivity technology available to everyone, Intel contributed the Thunderbolt protocol to USB promotion organizations in 2019 as the basis for the USB4. As a key member of the industry's leadership group, Intel is committed to continuing to drive the USB4 to even higher levels of performance.

Intel continues to lead the industry in I/O innovation. Intel works closely with its PC, accessory and cable partners to provide more advanced, complete wired connectivity solutions through technical support and testing programs. Thunderbolt products undergo rigorous validation testing, which allows royalty-free use of the Thunderbolt name and logo on equipment or marketing. The simple, easily recognizable Thunderbolt logo identifies the PC and accessories with a superior wired connection solution.
